TCU Neeley welcomed CEO Robert Isom for a discussion on leadership, highs and lows, and the economic growth of North Texas.

The Neeley School of Business hosted its second Tandy Executive Speaker Series of the semester at the Brown-Lupton University Union. The sold-out event featured Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, in conversation with Craig Crossland, John V. Roach Dean of the TCU Neeley School of Business. Together, they explored leadership, innovation, and the aviation industry’s influence on North Texas’ economic development.
Leadership and Focused Decision-Making
Opening the discussion, Isom reflected on his leadership journey and the core values that have guided him: collaboration, communication, and persistence.
Isom highlighted how his educational journey, which includes degrees in mechanical engineering, English and an MBA, shaped his leadership style and prepared him to tackle the challenges of leading a global airline. Achieving meaningful outcomes, he noted, often requires patience, as today’s decisions — such as infrastructure investments or strategic initiatives — can shape the future for decades.
Reflecting on the weight of leadership, Isom said, “Embracing the number of people who have invested their futures in what we do – and recognizing the importance of caring for people on life’s journey – are lessons I wish I had learned earlier in my career. It’s something that probably would have gotten me through some tough nights.”
Innovation Born of Necessity
Isom characterized the aviation industry as one fueled by necessity, where the constant demand for improvement drives companies to innovate and stand out. He emphasized that staying competitive requires ongoing differentiation, noting that necessity often sparks the most impactful inventions.
“The airline business is about more than flights — it’s about creating connections and being prepared for what’s next,” Isom said, reflecting on the importance of adaptability in a highly competitive market.
He highlighted the importance of flexibility and proactive planning, explaining how staying ahead requires awareness of global events and the ability to adapt systems to address challenges before they escalate.
Commitment to Community and Growth
Turning the conversation to North Texas, Isom discussed the interconnected growth of the region and American Airlines.
“The more Texas grows, the better American Airlines becomes,” he said.
Isom emphasized the company’s $5 billion investment in DFW Airport, commending Fort Worth’s innovative spirit and describing American Airlines as a key driver of business growth and economic development in the region.
“What North Texas will be tomorrow is the result of the ability to fly anywhere in the world through DFW,” Isom added, crediting the visionary decisions of local leaders in building a world-class transportation hub.
Crossland, reflecting on his recent move to Fort Worth, praised the city’s dynamic energy.
“There’s something that’s vibrant here,” Crossland remarked. “It feels like a place people are moving to, not moving from. There’s something intangible about that that’s really inspiring.”
Advice for Future Leaders
In his closing remarks, Isom encouraged TCU students to embrace new opportunities, invest time in understanding their industries, and establish a clear guiding vision early in their careers while fostering environments where others can rely on them.
“The lows are never as low as you think, and the highs are never as high,” Isom advised. “Stay steady, and we will find a way forward.”
Attendees found this closing advice particularly meaningful.
One student reflected, “I really liked how he ended by talking about not getting too low during the tough times or too high during the good times,” they shared. “His message about staying ready for whatever comes your way, learning from challenges, and using them to grow was really impactful.”
Another audience member echoed the sentiment, calling it “a simple but powerful reminder for students entering their careers.”
