The TCU Educational Investment Fund (EIF) was established in 1973 by Alcon Laboratories co-founder William C. Conner, who launched the fund with a $600,000 gift to benefit two organizations: TCU and Baylor College of Medicine's Department of Ophthalmology. One of the first university investment funds managed entirely by students, the EIF began with five student managers under the guidance of founding faculty advisor Professor Stanley Block.
In 1978, Conner contributed an additional $100,000 to the fund. Originally, annual distributions to beneficiaries were based on the fund's realized profits. In 1983, the distribution policy changed to 6% of the fund's year-end net asset value, and in 2016, the rate was reduced to 5%. Today, the fund distributes 5% annually based on the prior year-end balance.
Since its founding, the EIF has distributed more than $3.8 million to its beneficiaries while providing generations of TCU students with hands-on investment management experience.
